Cleanse

My brother just finished this cleanse where he got leaner and started to see a six pack. As soon as he described it to me, I knew I had to do it. The pluses: no loss of energy, muscle mass or ability to work out. I'm letting go of a lot of things in my life, so why not let go of some extra pounds. I've been working out a lot and I want to see the fruits of my labor.

I decided to start this after my birthday and Valentines Day which are both coming up. I figured I'll need some drinks and some chocolates to get through both.

I've lived my life with a lot of "I'd nevers" and this is another one to break through. I never thought that I'd have a body that people would want to look at and admire. Yes, I'm in fine shape. But I didn't think I'd ever have an enviable body. And I'm not saying that I do now. But maybe once I'd like to see my body looking a certain way. I'm more about health and how I'm feeling inside. But I don't want to avoid having something because I don't think I can. I want to have anything I want and that's what this body thing is about. I'm working my ass off at the gym, so why not have it be the best it can possibly be. It's inspiring.

My father used to say as a kid (as I'm sure most Dads did) that there is no such word as "can't." And once I said, "I can't run a marathon." And I did. And more recently, "I can't leave my boyfriend of five years." And I've always thought that "I can't have a six pack." "I can't look that good." I've accepted certain things about myself as truths and not understood that I can change anything in my life.

So is it frivolous? Maybe a little bit. But for me, anything superficial has a deeper meaning. This is what I want: I want a hot chest, great legs and rockin' arms to match the beauty that's already inside of me. I want to feel confident. Confident to share all of myself with other people. And how I feel on the outside affects how I feel inside. It directly affects my ability to feel worthy and okay enough to share the great things about myself. I don't want to hold back any more.

Okay, I did say that I was getting less sappy in this blog. So I will close by saying that I want to safely have more bone in my life. In my life, up my ass and in each hand.

Why the hell not? Life's too short. I want to be ALL OF ME, not just the parts that people find it easy to stomach.

And this cleanse is the next step. I want to cleanse myself of all the negativity. All of the ways that I stop myself. All of my blockages. I want to make room more healthier choices and ways of being. If my birthday and the upcoming valentine's day holiday plays some part in making those changes happen, then so be it. It sure beats being alone and miserable cause I don't have a man in my life.

Thank You, Juliana Marguiles

I just saw Juliana Marguiles' husband on the SAG Awards. I need to aim higher.

But in the meantime, I have excellence that I need to pursue. I have scripts I need to turn in. Scripts I need to start. Hair I need to maintain. A body I need to capitalize on and keep strong. And a wit to continue to use.

New Haven asked me last night if it was important to keep my body in shape. I hesitated. But I don't hesitate now. Yeah, it's fucking important. It's important to keep my discipline up in all areas. It's important to have tons of energy. It's important to live another 70 years so my life can truly have three or four acts. It's important for people to want to come up to me because they like the way I look, then it's important to hook them in with what I have upstairs and surprise them with what I have working downstairs. And to keep surprising them. Stamina is important. And it's important to be completely conscious of what goes into my body, not only for health's sake, but because when I eat a hot fudge sundae, I want to enjoy every chocolatey bite. And I want to know that I earned it.

It's a whole other world here in LA. I was just talking to my friend Susan this morning. And even as writers, we have to keep it together. Our bodies exude confidence and it's only a first impression. It does not shrink the size of our brains or make us superficial. I want to walk into a room and own it. But before I can own it by commanding the room, I need to look the part. Oddly enough, that's a lesson that I learned from my ex. Of course, the buck doesn't stop there. But a lasting first impression is a good thing. It's my job to look good, to speak well, to be funny and to get it right on the page.

And if I'm a good person, that married with my dedication to reading, writing and working out, hopefully I'll land a hottie that has the same dedication to reading writing and working out.

So thank you, Juliana Marguiles for letting me know that it indeed can be done.

Weight Off My Shoulders (and my stomach)

I've gotten skinnier. A little skinner.

One of the major changes a lot of people make after a break up is that they lose weight (some people gain weight, but that's not what I'm talking about here and that's just depressing). A friend of mine lost 40 pounds after her breakup, and about 15-20 in the 2-3 weeks immediately after.

There are a few reasons for this:

1) You're no longer going out to eat as much. Or ordering in as much. Can't afford to.
2) You now have to be ready to disrobe at a moment's notice (maybe that's just me).
3) You no longer feel complacent.
4) Depression. Sad but true.
5) You actually now have time to go to the gym. And to spin class. And to dance class. And to train for a marathon. And to do those at home DVDs that you've had stored away because you didn't want to wake him up.
6) You can actually go to those Nude Yoga classes on a regular basis. (And that IS just me)

For me, working out has been a great release. It allows me to get out any frustrations that are still left after working and writing this blog.

And this goes back to the hotness thing (earlier blog), but I never really thought that I could have that hot body, so why even try? I was always going to be more interesting (or so I thought) than attractive. And I never thought I could be both. But since I'm already well-read and articulate, I figure I might as well also be cut.

I was at the gym today and I see my gym crush. He's usually wearing a pair of green workout pants with a yellow stripe on the side, maybe by someone like Adidas or Puma. This guy has a cute face. But he's got an amazing ass. Anthony Marintino (Mario Cantone) from Sex and the City would describe it like this: "Like two scoops of butter pecan ice cream." I would say: "Ass Amazing."

And now I know his secret. I went into the exercise studio to do some push ups this morning and I see this guy. He's got a medicine ball and he's twisting from side to side WHILE doing backward lunges. Then he's doing phantom jump robe jumps. And some other sort of weird plyometric (jump training) exercise.

I thought I had gone as far as I could possibly go with my ass. Like I had reached my ass' biological glass ceiling. As a kid my ass was super flat. Then I started dancing in college and gained enough weight to look like a normal person. So my ass was cute. Then I started training for a marathon and running became a part of my regular routine. So now my ass is compact, but cute. However, it's not a plump ass and it's certainly not a double scoop. But staring at this guy's onion, I realized that maybe it IS possible. Maybe he was also teased for being flat as a board in the backdoor, so that he developed a complex. Then he researched "ass exercises" on Google and found exercises that accentuate the derriere.

Or maybe he comes from a family of hot assed guys. No matter, he knows the power of maintenance. Even a double D has to keep their tits firm. So the same holds true if you have a Double D ass, right? Right now I've got B cups that I'm trying to get to a solid C. If I'm successful, I promise there will be photos. And that IS a threat.

Time on My Hands

My friends and I happened upon this show on Logo called "1 Girl 5 Gays." We immediately started making fun of it.

Here's the Premise: 1 straight girl plays 20 Questions with a revolving cast of 5 gay men.

It's like a party when all the guests haven't arrived yet and someone decides it's time to play a game. Like 20 questions. Or sadder, a party where only five other people show up. And they're all smart alecy gays who live in the East Village. Although I think this is filmed in Canada. And it's like the cheapest production values ever. Like Public Access.

It's not like it perpetuates any stereotypes, although most of the gays are really queeny. And it's not offensive. Unless you call milquetoast gays offensive. Or if you find offensive the types of gays who would allow themselves to show up to a bad party thrown by their lonely ethnic fag hag friend who wears too much eye make up. And the questions aren't really of any consequence. It's no McLaughlin Group.

But that would be GREAT. A gay McLaughlin Group filled with a cast of variously aged gay men who have different political views due to how far before or after gay liberation they are. Now THAT would be "Fierce TV" (Logo's slogan).

And what makes this show weird besides everything that I just mentioned above is the fact that there are these little snippets inbetween that illustrate the next question. Like a guy in a shirt that gets tighter and tighter and eventually disappears is shown before the following question is asked: "How do you know when a shirt is too tight?"

Crickets.

Although I would enjoy if they added a tag to the end of each question.

"Who on the panel do you think is the most vain? DISCUSS!"

"Which cartoon character does the person on your right remind you of? DISCUSS!"

"How do you know when a shirt is too tight? DISCUSS!"

Better already.

I guess the thing that irks me about the show is that it's really not about anything. You're literally watching a random group of 5 gays answer questions about random topics in no particular order and with no particular theme, rhyme or reason.

It's not like there's a topic. Even my beloved SNL sketch, "Coffee Talk" was about something. And it was much shorter. What if they just re-enacted old "Coffee Talks"?

DISCUSS!

So I watched about two or three episodes and you know what happened? I got a little obsessed. So much so that I'm devoting a whole blog post to it. And a big one. Then I realized that maybe I have too much time on my hands. I'm "home" alone, after finishing a microwave meal, and watching Logo when I could be at Rimjob at MJ's in Silverlake. Or I could be working out. Or doing yoga stretches. You know something productive. But here I am watching this roundtable of gays discussing nothing.

Or...

Maybe it's not time yet. I mean it's only been five weeks. I was about to say that maybe I should go out on a date. I've gone out with friends. That's been fun. But maybe an actual date. I mean, clearly my ex-boyfriend is moving on. He's dating 25 year olds! Who clearly fit the profile. And when I say "profile" I mean he's got a type. Young (or young looking), brown, with longish hair. And for the most part it doesn't bother me, and I'm kind of revealing my hand here, but it did. It shouldn't have and it was so fucking cliche and expected. But it did. It bugged me. It bugged the mother loving shit out of me.

If you want to read my more rational reaction, you can read an earlier post.

And I'm totally happy where my life is. And how not complicated certain aspects are. I love that I don't have to pretend that things are great between us and that he's just surly. And I'm glad I don't have to romanticize his surlyness anymore.

(deep breath)

Okay. SO...If my personality was a city, what city would it be?
Venice. Italy. And not because it's sinking. But because it's a city you can get lost in. But it doesn't make you nervous. It just makes you turn around and want to explore more of the city. It's unexpected in its beauty. And it's near the water, continuous. And it looks best in it's own natural light. It glows. It's a never ending fairyland of discovery, mystery, beauty and intrigue.

Maybe I should invite someone to Venice.

No jokes about exploring my canals. Or my c-anals.

Okay?

Ch-ch-cha-changes

"When another door closes, another one opens."

"When you want something, the universe conspires to help you get it."

"Luck is preparation matched with opportunity."

All of these sayings have come to mind lately. As has been written in this blog, I have been out of my relationship for almost a month, since HALLOWEEN. And once you make one change in your life, everything else starts to move. So I apologize for not blogging for a week, but life has been happening.

Where to begin?

Well, I am starting a new job on December 6th, as the assistant to two showrunners who just got a pilot picked up on USA. That went down right before Thanksgiving. The job may take me out of town, if I go with my new bosses on location. And I continue to float around from guest bedroom to guest bedroom. And I will be house and dog sitting during the holidays, so that's terrific.

My biggest complaint and the great mystery that I needed to solve for the longest time was how to get unstuck. I felt completely immobile and it was a problem I didn't know how to solve.

I saw a friend last night for a post-Thanksgiving gathering. She's now married and trying for a baby. I told her I had been thinking a lot about her lately. She was in a relationship that was going nowhere. And I remember she called me in tears about three years ago because she didn't know what to do. She finally ended her relationship with a guy of seven years. And at the time I remember thinking that I would never have the courage to do that. Yes, there were things wrong with my relationship, but if I wanted to leave I didn't think I could. And when all of these wonderful things started happening to her as a result of her changing her life, I hoped the same would happen to me. Except I wanted to keep everything the same. The Universe doesn't work that way.

And here I am now. Four weeks. I have a blog I've gotten behind on. I still haven't told y'all the story of week two, which is the week I really decided to leave. And now I'm at the end of week four. I have no place to live. I'm relying on my friends. I'm starting a new job, which won't last longer than a few months if our pilot doesn't get picked up. I've already applied for other jobs that I never thought I would apply for. My motto is "Change Everything." If I don't like it, I can go back to the things I do like.

But if my life is going through a converter right now, I want to throw as many things in that converter as possible. Because the universe is turning everything to gold. So the more I change, the more gold I will have. I like that philosophy. And I'm sticking with it.

Friday Morning

I've officially been out of my house for almost three weeks now.

I sing "Teenage Dream" and I remember that we never got to watch that episode of "Glee" together. And I can hear the bedroom conversation:

HIM: "You're Kurt and I'm Blaine."

ME: "Why are you Blaine?"

HIM: "Because I have a better voice. And you're more gay."

ME: "Maybe I'm just more emotional."

HIM: "Maybe I just want to sing that song to you."

I miss him. And it hit me this morning. I know I'm not really explaining why we broke up. Suffice it to say that I wouldn't leave flippantly. There needed to be bigger reasons to leave that made the relationship unbearable. He's not unbearable, he's actually incredibly lovable and in extreme need of love. I finally realized that I needed more. I needed a voice in my relationship and couldn't just be the emotional center.

I couldn't just hear things like:

"You're so patient."

"Thank God for you."

"He's blessed to have you."

And it started to sound like mockery. I started to feel like maybe I was a fool for being so patient and loving--two things by the way that I think are the keys to a successful relationship. But I'm not longer in one, so what do I know?

In the he said/she said movie of this relationship, it will be said that he took me to wonderful places and we ate at fabulous restaurants and felt important. I would rather feel important for the work I do and the person I am, not for where I show up. And I can cook my own goddamn dinner. I'm an amazing cook. It became all about this image and projecting this persona. Eventually, so did our relationship.

But that doesn't take away from the fact that this morning at 9 AM, I miss being his boyfriend. I know I left for the right reasons and that the relationship left me doubting myself. I'm better for having left. I know he'd dispute this if he ever reads this, but it was emotionally abusive. At a certain point he knew that. But I miss the private moments. The "Glee" watch parties together. The eating in bed and making funny faces. The laying in bed with our two dogs. But I couldn't trade my own dignity and my own path for those moments. It was just two high a price to pay.

So THAT I don't miss. And I am glad I was brave enough to leave. I may not totally believe it was an act of bravery yet, but my friends keep telling me that, so I'm choosing to believe them. At least until I can believe it myself.

My New Face

The Transformation: Hair Cut 3

And here's what happened.

He almost left it like this.

Then we cut off more and more and more. I had a lot of hair.

And here's the finished product.

The Transformation: Hair Cut 2

So I went to his salon and waited.

What was I going to do?

Or better question, what was Josh going to do to me?

The Transformation: Hair Cut 1

So this is what my hair used to look like.

It's very Lindsay Lohan mug shot, according to friends. I needed a change (obviously), so I decided to get my friend Josh to cut my hair.

Only directive: make me young and hot. I don't care how much comes off.
